Baleka Mbete is the Speaker of South Africa’s National Assembly and the National Chairperson for the African National Congress (ANC). She was elected secretary general of the ANC Women’s League in 1990. In 2008, Mbete became Deputy President of South Africa. She is an active politician and writer, having published Essential Things, an anthology of poetry.

She took on the position of interim president of instability and violence resulting from the ongoing civil war in her country. Previously, she'd worked as the mayor of Bangui. She encouraged disarmament in spite of Central African Republic’s religious conflicts.
