(1) A line of levels, a series of lines of levels, or a combination of lines or parts of lines of levels that, together with a continuous series of measured differences of elevation, extends continuously from a starting point through a sequence of intermediate points back to the starting point. As a boundary between states or nations, the main channel of a navigable stream is the deepest and most navigable channel as it was at the time the boundary was surveyed. The main channel of a non navigable stream was decided to be, in a particular case (boundary between Oklahoma and Texas, 1923) to be the median line between gradient lines on each bank.
