Proturječje se pojavljuje kad netko tvrdi dvije međusobno isljučive tvrdnje, kao što su, "Pobačaj je u redu i pobačaj nije u redu". Budući da tvrdnja i njena kontradiktorna tvrdnja ne mogu obje biti istinite, jedna od njih mora biti neistinita. Malo je onih koji će tvrditi izravnu kontradikciju, ali netko može doći u stanje nedosljednosti.
