Za Sosira, jezik je predstavljao odnosni sistem "vrednosti". On je razlikovao vrednost znaka od njegovog značenja. Znak nema "apsolutnu" vrednost sam po sebi - njegova vrednost zavisi od odnosa sa drugim znakovima unutar značenjskog sistema kao celine. Reči u različitim jezicima mogu da imaju ekvivalentna referentna značenja ali različite vrednosti jer pripadaju različitim mrežama asocijacija.
