Kemijski element koji nosi simbol Au (od latinskog: aurum "zlato"), a atomski broj mu je 79. Zlato je čvrst, mekan, sjajan, kovan i provodljiv metal. Čisto zlato je sjajno žute boje i sjaja koji se tradicionalno smatra privlačnim, a taj sjaj zadržava bez oskidiranja na zraku ili u dodiru s vodom. Kemijski, zlato je prijelazni metal i u skupini 11 periodnog sustava. Kedan je od najmanje reaktivnih čvrstih kemijskih elemenata. Metal se iz tog razloga često pojavljuje u elementarnom (prirodnom) obliku, kao obluci ili zrna u stijenama, žilama i u aluvijalnim nanosima. Rjeđe se pojavljuje u mineralima.
