Burma, or Myanmar, is a country in Southeast Asia. The country is bordered by the People's Republic of China on the northeast, Laos on the east, Thailand on the southeast, Bangladesh on the west, India on the northwest, and the Bay of Bengal to the southwest, with the Andaman Sea defining its southern periphery. It has a military political regime (a nominally civilian government has been named, but a formal transfer of power has not yet taken place). Rangoon (Yangon) was the capital until 2005. The new capital is Naypyidaw. Since 1989 the military authorities in Burma have promoted the name Myanmar as a conventional name for their state.
