Персијски ратови
Две персијске инвазије Грчке. Прва, казнена експедиција против Атине 490 године пре нове ере, је поражена у бици код Маратона. Друга, 480 пне, била је свеопшти покушај освајања од стране Ксеркса, који је водио огромну силу у Грчку. Након почетних победа и спаљивања Атине, Персијанци су поражени на мору код Саламиса (480) и Микале (479), а на земљишту код Платеје (479). Победа је донела талас самопоуздања Грцима и изнад свега Атињанима.
