Modem omogućava da dva računara komuniciraju putem običnih telefonskih linija. Ime je dobio od naziva procesa modulacije/demodulacije pomoću kojih modem konvertuje digitalne računarske podatke u analogne i obratno, radi njihovog prenosa putem analogne telefonske linije.
